We recently finished a basement finishing and remodeling project of converting an unfinished basement in a 1920’s NE Portland area house to living space. We worked in cooperation with the homeowner to continue the style of the house that was in the upstairs to the new work. We were able to do this by building the trim work in the same unique style, matching the door style and hardware and selecting fixtures that matched the craftsman style of bungalow.
There were some challenges to the creation of more living space. The stairs needed to be redesigned and built. In collaboration with our architect, we were able to find a solution that fit in the limited space and modern building requirements. In the new space we built a bedroom with egress, work out room with sauna, bathroom, and a new laundry area.
This home was especially meaningful to the homeowner, who grew up there and later inherited it from her parents. Childhood birthday parties once filled the backyard, and today it reflects her passion for gardening. We added a new door and deck off the kitchen, making access to the backyard—and time spent enjoying it—part of everyday life.
The homeowner asked us to preserve several original elements, including the windows, stair treads, and wood paneling, and we were happy to do so. Some of the reclaimed paneling was thoughtfully repurposed as wainscoting in the new bathroom, where it became a beautiful accent. The homeowners were very pleased with the finished project, and it was a true privilege to work on a home that holds so much history and meaning for them.
