We are excited to introduce a Basement Remodel project we completed in Alameda. The stairs to the basement needed to be rebuilt to meet safety and code requirements. We were able to design and build the new stairs with the help of our architect and our city inspector. The new stair treads are the same white oak as on the main floor. The new family room has an egress window and a large sliding barn door. The room can be used for overnight guests or movie evenings.
The fastest and least expensive way to expand your home is to convert the basement to living space. Often it is possible to design a large family room for gatherings and relaxing. A new quiet bedroom or office can be designed with modern sound reducing materials. We can build in a way that limits sound from the rest of the house.
This white oak slat wall on the stairs was a requested design feature. We built it on site and slit it in to place. There are no visible fasteners and all the connections are made from the back of the frame for a clean modern look.
Stepping back shows the built-in triangle storage under the stairs, one of our most requested details. We have designed this area with simple shelving, space for small refrigerator and storage for luggage and awards. No requests for young wizard housing yet.
In addition to Basement Remodeling is our specialty with Bathroom Remodeling. This new guest bathroom is simple and clean. The modern white tile is contrasted with green schoolhouse fixtures and mirror.
No details were missed such as the narrow reeded glass in this bathroom was a great choice. It provides privacy to the room and goes with the style of the house.
We love taking an outdated or unfinished basement and making it new again. Not only does remodeling your basement add value to your home, it can also greatly expand your livable area. A finished basement adds beauty to your home and opens it up to the possibility of additional bedrooms, playrooms, a home theater, an exercise room, an extra kitchen area or a bar.
“After living with our partially finished basement for over 3 years, we decided it was time to transform it into a proper living space for our family with two soon-to-be teens. The project included adding a bathroom, a multi-purpose room with egress windows (to qualify as a legal bedroom), closet space, and a laundry area. We met with three companies, but something about Maxwell and Green Light Construction just clicked with us – and wow, did that instinct pay off.
From the design phase through completion, Maxwell struck the perfect balance of being professional and personable. He worked collaboratively with us on the floor plan, offering several options and explaining how structural and plumbing realities might affect the layout. The budget discussions were refreshingly transparent – Maxwell was clear about what was included in the core costs and which items (like bathroom fixtures and carpet) we’d select and purchase separately.
Like others have mentioned, Maxwell’s communication throughout was spot-on. His team and subcontractors were consistently punctual and skilled, and they kept the workspace remarkably clean. They even set up our washer/dryer in temporary spots throughout the phases so we could keep doing laundry – a huge help for our family of four. The project stayed on schedule, passed every inspection without a hitch, and even when we requested changes, Maxwell was accommodating and offered creative solutions when needed.
What really stood out was how little the renovation disrupted our daily life, partly thanks to the basement location with garage access, but mostly due to Maxwell’s considerate approach to managing the project. After completion, he gave us time to live in the space before coming back for touch-ups – that kind of attention to detail makes all the difference.
We’ve ended up with exactly what we wanted: a warm, inviting space that works perfectly for our family now and will adapt well for future needs. Looking back, we keep saying how fortunate we were to have found Maxwell and Green Light Construction for this project.”
