I just read through this special issue from Fine home building and this one is a good one. To be honest these days most people are trying to get the most from their remodeling budget. This issue has some projects and ideas that look great are built of quality materials and are on budget. An issue well worth it.
The project is all together. There were a lot of custom and unique pieces to put together this room. The glass for the walk in shower is 3/8 inch thick and is mounted on chrome hinges and clips. The sink vanity is an old dresser with attached mirror. It just fit in the sloping ceiling. It adds a bit of character and warmth to the room.
The home owner decorated the room with antique mirrors that make the small space feel bigger and add a unique charm. From planning to finish this was one of our favorite bathroom remodels.
The tile work is done for the shower. The white subway tile is a classic choice with a light grey grout it will keep this shower alcove bright. The shower floor is a 1″ hex tile in carrara marble. The shape of the 1″ hex tile is a good fit to the 1920 era of the house. A standard bathroom floor from the 1020’s would be a white porcelain hex tile. The marble may not have been a choice available in Portland at that time, the material looks great in this bathroom.
There is a lot of variation in this natural material. The marble is quarried in Italy, the colors in the marble can very from bright white, to greys and some yellow. We had a few days wait to get the color marble that we wanted in the quantity we needed. We wanted to use the sample on the right for this project.
We got the Wedi shower system in place. This system has the advantage of being vapor proof as well as water tight. We will be able to apply tile directly to this surface with thin set. There is a small toe kick bench for storing shower products. The system would allow recessed spaces as bigger benches. The adaptability of the product made this sloping ceiling space possible. We considered several of the items described on the bathroom planing page of our web site.
The room is taken down to the studs in areas as needed. We have run new electric and plumbing supply to fixture locations. We started framing in the new walk in shower. It will be a 3×5 foot walk in shower. It will be a big improvement over the old minimum 30″by 30″ shower. The vanity will be made out of an old dresser that will have a sink fitted in the top. The vanity is taking some adaptive carpentry. Some of the plumbing fixtures will be on a auto vent which reduces the number of roof penetrations that we need. Less holes in the roof is a good thing . The plumbers are the superheros on this project, by finding faster and better ways to get the work done, thanks.
