We got the shower floor drain in place. This is a unique system that fits in to space. It is a pre-sloped linear drain system that will allow large 12×12 tiles to be placed on it. Most of the time a small 2×2 tile will be used to cover the floor. The linear drain is stainless steel and will allow a lot of water to flow which is useful in a shower taht has several fixtures. The floor tiles need to have a certain slip resistance rating and also be non porous to be used on the shower floor.
We put together plans for a bathroom remodel in historic building in the pearl district. The old brick warehouse was turned in to loft condominiums about 15 years ago; it is a mix of historic structure and modern convenience. We created plans to meet the owner’s needs; the condominium board’s historic requirements; and the safety requirements for a building with six floors of tenants.
Much of the charm of the loading docks has been preserved in the development of the building. The architectural features of the old warehouse provide visual interest. Here is a link to some of our other historic projects.
I just read through this special issue from Fine home building and this one is a good one. To be honest these days most people are trying to get the most from their remodeling budget. This issue has some projects and ideas that look great are built of quality materials and are on budget. An issue well worth it.
The tile work is done for the shower. The white subway tile is a classic choice with a light grey grout it will keep this shower alcove bright. The shower floor is a 1″ hex tile in carrara marble. The shape of the 1″ hex tile is a good fit to the 1920 era of the house. A standard bathroom floor from the 1020’s would be a white porcelain hex tile. The marble may not have been a choice available in Portland at that time, the material looks great in this bathroom.
There is a lot of variation in this natural material. The marble is quarried in Italy, the colors in the marble can very from bright white, to greys and some yellow. We had a few days wait to get the color marble that we wanted in the quantity we needed. We wanted to use the sample on the right for this project.
The room is taken down to the studs in areas as needed. We have run new electric and plumbing supply to fixture locations. We started framing in the new walk in shower. It will be a 3×5 foot walk in shower. It will be a big improvement over the old minimum 30″by 30″ shower. The vanity will be made out of an old dresser that will have a sink fitted in the top. The vanity is taking some adaptive carpentry. Some of the plumbing fixtures will be on a auto vent which reduces the number of roof penetrations that we need. Less holes in the roof is a good thing . The plumbers are the superheros on this project, by finding faster and better ways to get the work done, thanks.
